Most people haven’t thought about mitochondria probably since about the 5th grade. This week, we would like to update you and inform you of the great influence these tiny organelles have on your health.

Every cell has 100 to 100,000 mitochondria which produce energy in the form of ATP. They are the source of over 90 % of your body’s energy. Rhonda Patrick, PhD is a biomedical scientist who has done extensive research on aging, cancer, and metabolism. She is currently doing her post-doctoral research in Oakland, California, “working with Dr. Bruce Ames…The primary focus of the research is the role of nutrition in preventing age-related diseases like cancer, neurodegenerative diseases, and different inflammatory-related diseases like obesity and type 2 diabetes.”

In sum, her findings tell us that, “your mitochondria have enormous potential to influence your health, specifically cancer, and optimizing mitochondrial metabolism may be at the core of effective cancer treatment.”

Dr. Patrick believes that the following things can be done in order to optimize your mitochondria’s power to kick chronic illness to the curb:

  • Avoid late night eating: adding excess fuel at bedtime will generate excessive free radicals that will damage your tissues, accelerate aging, and contribute to chronic disease.
  • Feed your mitochondria with the following nutrients:  CoQ10 or ubiquinol (the reduced form); L-Carnitine, which shuttles fatty acids to the mitochondria; D-ribose, which is raw material for ATP molecule; Magnesium; Omega-3 fatty acids; All B vitamins, including riboflavin, thiamine, and B6; and Alpha-lipoic acid (ALA).
  • Exercise forces mitochondria to work harder creating signaling molecules to make more mitochondria to keep up with the heightened energy requirement. This, in turn, will help stave off degeneration and extend the youthful part of your life.

Aging is inevitable, however, you have enormous control over the way you age.  Being more mindful of your mitochondria and their needs will help tremendously when it comes to the rate at which we age.  The Spring provides you with all of the nutritional support required to keep your mitochondria happy.  Our goal is always to make your life happier, healthier, and more vibrant.  Click here to read the full article found on Dr. Joseph Mercola’s website, or check out the Youtube video below to watch Dr. Mercola & Dr. Patrick discuss Mitochondria.
