What’s With All the Gut Health Talk?

Good Question…The answer, in short, is that your immune system primarily lives in the digestive system, so in the gut. For this reason, it is imperative to keep your gut in tip-top shape, so that you can be
and stay well. ¬†“A healthy adult, on average, carries 1.5-2 kg of bacteria in the gut.” (p16) Our focus today will be on the good bacteria, also known as the beneficial flora. So what role does your good bacteria play? Quite a significant one!

For starters, the entire length of your digestive tract is coated with a bacterial layer providing a natural¬†gut-bacteriabarrier against invaders, undigested food, toxins, and parasites. Apart from that, your beneficial flora “work against invasive pathogenic micro-organisms by producing antibiotic-like substances, anti-fungal volatiles, anti-viral substances…that dissolve membranes of viruses and bacteria; they engage the immune system to respond appropriately to invaders.” (p16)

In other words, your good bacteria engage the immune system to respond and fight pathogens; they neutralize toxins, chelate metals, and suppress & inactive histamine. They also absorb & de-activate carcinogens and suppress hyperplasia in the gut, which is the basis of all cancer formation!
