Sixty-five years ago, Alexander Fleming, MD, the scientist who discovered penicillin (and the man in the photo below), warned people that doctors are abusing penicillin and the effects this would have. He said, “In such cases, the thoughtless person [physician] playing with penicillin is morally responsible for the death of the man who finally succumbs to infection with the penicillin-resistant organism [superbug]. I hope this evil can be averted.”
Sadly, what Alexander Fleming warned us about has come true. Because penicillin is in almost all antibiotics, and because as a society we are very liberal with our antibiotics, multiple strands of superbugs have evolved. An example of this occurred at UCLA with a superbug called CRE. At least seven people were infected in this incident, and two of them died. Also, 15% of pneumonia cases originate from a superbug. Doctors are aware of this rising epidemic, and are asking that alternatives to antibiotics be found. Lots of money and research are being invested in this field, but no results have arisen.
